a brief history of the potato
c. 3000 BC
The potato is first cultivated in Peru.
As a result of this the ancient
Egyptians establish one of the first and most influential civilisations.
1537
Europeans come into contact with the potato for the
first time when the Conquistadors reach Peru.
As a tribute to this discovery the first European
conservatories of music are founded in Naples and Venice.
1573
The first planting
of a potato in Europe is recorded in Spain in this year.
In
the resulting euphoria Venice
and Turkey signed the Peace of Constantinople and the great painter Caravaggio
is born.
1590s
The potato is introduced to
England.
The English celebrate by introducing the
Poor Relief Act and performing the plays of Shakespeare.
1789
Thomas Jefferson lends his support to the
potato in the US, after which it is widely accepted.
Democracy
follows in the wake of the potato and the first US presidential elections are held in this year.
1939-45
The acreage of potato production in Great
Britain is doubled.
Great Britain and the
rest of the allied forces are victorious in WWII.
The
above events cannot be purely coincidental. The potato has clearly been a force
for good throughout the history of mankind and should be celebrated.
